I dont know how close they are. I know that firewire(i.link) mostly uses hubs
that can be used as repeaters. You can chain out to 70meters of hub and cable.
I have no idea if usb or combo hubs can do that.
i.link is a Sony developed thing. The same people who brought you the 3.5
floppy.
