I did not use the live cd. It has, I think, some gaming on it and is 'live'
so you can run the game without doing an install. I just used the regular
gentoo 1.4 rc2 install image.

Why a spare machine? The network set up in the gentoo install is fine.
At least if you are using ethernet. I do not know about modems. Does the
gentoo network work for you?
