Gentoo plug:

You should try Gentoo. The command to install a stable xine is:

	emerge xine

It downloads the source and any patches, deals with dependencies, and
compiles it locally with your favorite compiler and environment options.

Of course, I still need to see how to play encoded DVDs, as the official
Gentoo xine does not install this. Maybe there is an underground Gentoo site
with such things. In Romania, I would imagine.
