With a little experimentation, I found most of the answers.  The gimp
interface really has all that xscanimage offers (it seems), and it
works.  It just takes some getting used to.

BTW, xscanimage is gimped (no pun intended) for me - incomplete menu
(only exit) and even exit does not work (had to use xkill).
