I also found 8.1 to have a few small issues with:
1.  nvidia drivers (open drivers are fine, but no 3D)
2.  KDM
3.  KDE is pretty but significantly slower then in 8.0 (on my PII-400)
4.  Konsole

Overall I would try a new install (not upgrade) with 8.1.
Most problems will be obvious, and you could always remove 8.1 and go back to 8.0
The install is quite straight-forward.
