Just to summarize:
1) xfce has a panel which includes iconized menu selections and
desktop switching buttons.
2) There is an optional taskbar that allows you to switch windows
directly.
3) A menu will be generated for kde and/or gnome applications if you
have them installed.
4) xfce starts up in mere seconds, and it restarts 99% of your
programs on the desktops/position where they last ran. A very few
programs don't respond to the window geometry hints, and a very few
simply refuse to restart automatically.
5) I've only experienced xfce/xfwmone failure in several releases and
approximately 4 years; even new features in testing (like taskbar)
were more stable than the average package.
6) There is a very responsive user group, plus lots of folks here use
xfce.
7) All you have to lose is a lot of frustration dealing with kde!
Enjoy,
