Kurt, for once, you're both right and right.

I've run Sylpheed since somewhere around 4.0 (maybe earlier).  I'm now
running 8.6.  The problems he's experiencing (holes, etc.,) were fixed a
_long_ time ago in Sylpheed, so he's either running a _very_ old version
of Sylpheed, or one compiled without any of the support libraries for
graphics, etc.  I'd say both are his problem.  My Sylpheed (compiled with
_all_ optional libraries) reads HTML (even the crappy spaghetti-code HTML
Outhouse Distress writes) just fine.  Pics are separate attachments, but I
don't like the distraction of pix breaking up the flow of the text.  If I
need the picture, I'll refer to it.
