I will study this and get back to you.
Interestingly enough, kpackage (at first glance) seems to be functional 
with this bug.  Right now I am struggling with an ISAPNP Soundblaster 
card that worked fine in 2.2.14 and doesn't work with 2.4.x  and I'm 
determined to figure out the problem if it kills me.
