char major=14,minor=6:

6 = /dev/sndstat      Sound card status information {2.6}

In any event, it was removed from 2.4. From $KERNEL/Documentation/sound/NEWS:

"=== /dev/sndstat and /proc/sound are gone

In older Linux versions those files exported some information about the
OSS/Free configuration to userspace. In Linux 2.3 they were removed because
they did not support the growing number of pci soundcards and there were
some general problems with this interface."

Do you have a PCI sound card? "lspci" should get you started.

I don't believe there really IS a GAS SHORTAGE.. I think it's all just
a BIG HOAX on the part of the plastic sign salesmen -- to sell more
numbers!!
