For what's worth I think the whole thing is a cultural war disguised as
a religious jihad. The fanatics come from countries that are essentially
medieval. They find themselves being constantly bombarded by modern
western ideas. Their way of life is threatened by the west. In Saudi
Arabia for example, we had little trouble until Desert Storm and we
flooded the country with female soldiers. In a country where women can
not travel unless accompanied by a male relative and are not permitted
to drive cars they find themselves ducking out of the way of
unaccompanied, unveiled lady soldiers roaring down the road behind the
wheel of an 18 wheeler. They also find themselves exposed to ideas such
as freely elected governments and human rights that extend beyond the
power of government and you have a direct threat to their medieval
culture. Throw in a few Muslim preachers denouncing the devil's western
way, offer the Islamic version of a papal indulgence and a free trip to
paradise where a fanatic has his choice of virgins and can lay around
for eternity stuffing himself full of melon balls dipped in honey and
toss in few inflammatory statements from the spokesmen of the so-called
Christian right and you have the a terrorist, but not a religious war.
The Koran doesn't proscribe the subjugation of women, prohibition of
rights, or the maintenance of hereditary government. The culture does.
That is the reason for the reason for the terrorists. Drive a wedge
between the two cultures and isolate them. That way the more powerful
culture will not be able to crush the weaker and drag its inhabitants
into the 21st century.
