HELP!!!! anybody who knows php here? -- solved

well, that only took a week.

i poked around the documentation for php and found that the zlib stuff 
was handled by ob_gzhandler. grepped for it in all pf phpnuke and 
found it as the first line of mainfile.php. nuked it therefrom. 
cachefiles now human-readable.

many thanks to federico, who did about double my knowledge of php 
hacking even though it did not directly save the day, and to everyone 
else who endured my inability to suffer in silence.
