I've just finished downloading Redhat 8.0, and
can understand your frustration
Unfortunately, listed in the release notes, everything
on this edition was compiled with GCC 3.2 .
GCC 3.2 breaks certain old programs originally compiled
with GCC 2.95.X or later, or earlier.
Therefore, KDE that came out had to be able to compile
with this version, along with every other program.
So, if you attempted to run a install a programs from
source, and unless they were 'dooable' in GCC 3.2, those
programs are hooped.
You may want to install a previous compiler, and link to those
libraries from it, inorder to get your programs to work.
Of course, the compiler would have to built side-by-side with
the existing one.
But I don't know if you can install a older compiler, with
an existing newer one.
Maybe ask some else here if they have ever attempted this, and
what to start looking for.
