Newbie : GCC, Monolithic kernel

caldera installed the gcc to /usr/bin and /usr/lib. So I followed.

yes, if and only if you have a way to delete your newly installed files. 
that's why I used checkinstall to make the rpm. then rpm -e will remove 
any trial build of any package. checkinstall merely automates the `make 
install` stage. you still need to run your ./configure and ./make
