Compile modules for the kernel?

Is it possible to compile a module for the kernel without recompiling the
kernel itself? Let's say I got a new sound card and don't have that module
in the sound directory in /var/lib/modules, because when I compiled my
kernel I chose the Soundblaster stuff for the card I had then. Is it
possible to just compile the module needed for the new card? If so, how do
I do that?
Thankfully, I do not have the problem, but I have wondered about this and
never seen it addressed. Thanks.
