Well I am the H/W geek and I can tell you that I threw Suse 8.0 out the
window, no I sold it a week after buying it. It did wierd things and was
unable to do the bleeding edge. The configs are a nightmare, but the install
was reasonable but glitchy. On the otherhand I tried it on a friends older
machine and got similar results to what you describe.
I can say with reasonable assurance it was not the hardware but the software.
