First, Linux is Linux is Linux. Not just the kernel, all the distros.
It's just that people have their preferences. You'll find as much
variation on the desktop as you will the distro. I have several distros
loaded on my systems just to see how various distros do things. And I use
Blackbox as my desktop (though I don't recommend that for your wife unless
you're looking for a divorce, she'll never figure it out -- too unlike
Windoze). Others on this list use ion, xfce, kde, sawfish, etc.
Second, I find all distros equally good (or equally bad depending on your
viewpoint). They're just different -- different library versions,
different (GUI) admin tools, different install. But underneath, they're
all the same.
Think of it as a religious thing and you'll understand folks' desire to
help you by bringing you into their fold.
