here's a stunt distro that puts gentoo to shame:

what it is, in case you don't want to follow the link, is knoppix, a 
german distro that boot and runs debian woody, kde-3.02, openoffice, 
etc., entirely from CD. good for a recovery CD, also for demos, also 
for taking to work if work has a bootable CD but no linux, etc. i do 
not know but believe that it even networks if the machine is hooked 
to a dhcp server someplace.

i think this is one of the coolest things i've heard of in a long 
time.
