KDE2 blows up

Folks,

I recently threw Debian at a box and most things work well (the Debian
folks being kinda anal about bugs, just wish they'd correct that GNU bug
where GNU keeps showing up in front of Linux like GNU owned Linux).

Anyway, Gnome works, Blackbox works, etc.  However, when KDE2 starts, it
gets to the keyboard/mouse icon, flashes once or twice, then blows up. 
The only things in the logs suggest perhaps ksmserver can't connect to
:0., and that :0 exited.

Any suggestions where to start looking?
