changing monitors

Now that I've vented in frustration, I'll try to be truly helpful.
X version 4.x has a new configuration command-line option which may help.
You can invoke it (of course, after backing up your current XF86Config
(-4) file) by typing this from a shell as root:

X -configure

This is available on COL311, but it doesn't appear to be on MDK81.
There are various other configuration programs, most of which are not very
user-friendly and still require you to know details of how X is configured
(beyond the usual 1024x786/24color stuff).
Once you have a winning config file (and assuming each system is capable
of handling the same things) back up the existing X configs on each box
and try using the same /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (this is for X version
4.x)
Have fun!
