changing monitors

If you're content to run at the same resolution & refresh rate, it's
just plug and go. (Assuming new monitor >= capability of old monitor). 

If you want to take advantage of the capability of the bigger monitor,
then you'll need to run one of the X configurators once the new monitor
is connected.
