Well, there is BearOps. If the hardware is kosher, BearOps installs
with three mouse clicks.
BearOps would not install on my Quantum "bigfoot" but works fine with
an old WD drive I had.
Since your sister reportedly swapped the Maxtor for a WD, it may be
worth a try.
