Hard drive not detected properly by linux: SOLVED (maybe)

I didn't use the Maxtor software because early on in the installation it
asked for a boot disk of the OS I would be using. I don't even know what a
boot disk in linux is.

This is irritating, because the OS used by the Maxtor installation program
is DR-DOS from caldera.
