For Mplayer, if you run "./configure --help" you'll see these lines:
   --with-extraincdir=DIR   extra headers (png, dvb, mad, sdl, css, ...) 
in DIR
   --with-extralibdir=DIR   extra library files (png, SDL, ...) in DIR

use them to fix your mess.
