Error installing freetype-1.3.1

I'm following the sxs on installing XFree86 with truetype and anti-aliased
fonts. I get the follwing error when doing make install on freetype-1.3.1:

/usr/src/XFree/freetype-1.3.1/test/arch/unix/../../arch/unix/gwin_x11.c:22: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory
/usr/src/XFree/freetype-1.3.1/test/arch/unix/../../arch/unix/gwin_x11.c:23: X11/Xutil.h: No such file or directory
/usr/src/XFree/freetype-1.3.1/test/arch/unix/../../arch/unix/gwin_x11.c:24: X11/cursorfont.h: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [gwin_x11.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/XFree/freetype-1.3.1/test'
make: *** [install] Error 2

Any ideas?
