xfce with taskbar

There is one other I really like, especially for my laptop (and even more
when I'm showing off programs to clients): ion. 

ion uses a different paradigm.  It maximizes everything, but provides you
a "taskbar" across the top of the screen.  For a 15 inch or smaller screen
I highly recommend it.  I like to have several windows open on my 19" I
can slide from one to the other by just moving the mouse (sloppy
focus/autoraise).  Never figured out how to do that in Windoze.
