Switching fs-type from reiserfs to ext2/3

I don't know the full answer, but I've found that a partition seems to
hang onto some information about its original formatting.  When this
happens to me, I am able to mount the partion by specifying the
current -t xxxxx when mounting the partition.  To avoid this happening
again, apparently you must use dd (or other utility) to wipe out the
start of the partition before reformatting the partition to you new
filesystem.
