Any ideas on ppscsi/sane problem?

I am running Suse 8.0 which is using the stock kernel. Ihave a HP Scanjet
5100C parport scanner that ran fine under 7.3. Won't work in 8.0. Here is
what was done:

Sane is installed.

I do a modprobe epst and modprobe ppscsi. My /var/log/messages files returns:
Jun 20 08:41:50 linux kernel: scsi2 : epst

So I set my /etc/sane.d/hp.conf with the following values:

scsi HP
/dev/sg2

I set permissions to allow the user group to read and write.

I run cdrecord -scanbus to see what is found. It returns:

inux:/home/harrycg # cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.11a19 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 J?rg Schilling

No scanner. (The SM Media is a Smartmedia card reader).

What am I missing or did I do wrong here? Yast2, Xsane and Kooka don't see it
either. I did the usual cord check, and the printer on the output side of
the scanner prints fine.

Quit frustrating.

Any ideas, amigos?

Thanks very much in advance.
