For starters, this message is 4.5k right now. But that's really
irrelevant. The point is that all of the list members shouldn't have to
be impacted by 1 person's personal preferences.
Registering to the NYT website is not subscribing to a service. Its
registering for access to one of the world's great newspapers, which they
are providing for free, with the assumption that they can recoup their
online expenses, and possible lost revenue of the hard copy with promises
to advertisers on how many registered users they will attract.
Remember the .com implosion? It happened, in part, because companies
never bothered to think about how they would become profitable *before*
their funding ran out. Sure, the NYT is not a typical .com by any means,
but they still have bills to pay. If providing them with just your email
address (as everything else you provide can be false) is too much of an
incumberance for you, then don't read it. Demanding that several hundred
others get it gratis certainly isn't fair to the other list members or the
NYT.
