Yep, that's why there is more than one kind of used car. Mozilla has
maintained the mix of functions that Netscape started which is more
than many of us need or want. It's still a damn good browser. It's
too bad there isn't a Galeon equivalent that incorporates the Gecko
component only without dragging in the gnome crapola.
I used pine years ago on the Unix systems at work, and it was ok, but
now I have Sylpheed so I don't need to worry any more. What's more,
I've never checked to see if Sylpheed is bloated or not - it just
works.
OpenOffice/StarOffice is quite bloated, too, but it is still arguably
the best available office product for linux.
It all depends on whether I need the bloat or not. In the case of kde
and gnome, I'll pass, but Mozilla is a fine browser, so I'll keep
using it. I'm using about 2 Gig out of a 7 Gig partition, so I have
room to burn. I also have 256Mg memory, so my swap file is seldom
used even when running the bloated beasties.
At this point in history, I think linux developers should worry more
about providing the functionality needed to make linux viable in the
desktop/office market and then worry about bloat.
My $.02 (or maybe it's only $.01 today).
enjoy,
