Another side note, the LFS install process basically involves creating
a statically linked version of enough utilities to compile the actual
dynamically linked system. The ALFS (google for that) project
attempts to automate that process. A stripped down and totally
automated version of this "bootstrap" process is at the core of the
gentoo installation as well.
