I haven't tried LFS in something over a year now (actually since I
discovered the "unmentionable" distro in my sig), but at that time LFS
thought that a linux distro consisted of a basic command line system
with no X or desktop support. Except for the Beyond LFS (google for
that) effort, you had to roll your own support for X, etc.
On a side note, I found the LFS book to be a useful if tedious summary
of the basic system packages.
