I've seen some cases where webmin under Caldera 2.3 server manages to
clobber /etc/{passwd,shadow} leaving at least one of them empty.
Fortunately I've been able to recover the systems from the previous night's
backup tapes without serious downtime. I did add some processing to the
script we have run whenever any changes are made in useradmin under webmin
(a nice feature BTW), adding code that automatically backs up the
/etc/{passwd,shadow} files to a secure directory after any changes. Before
it does the backup though, it checks to see if any administrative accounts
have gone missing, and if so it immediately restores the backups from the
last change, sending us an e-mail saying it's been done.
