This question got me thinking. 

This applies to Libranet also, which freely offers just an older
version, somewhat dated. (However, it's debian compatible for updates.) 

In my case I'm trying elx linux because I'm a hobbyist, and don't need
linux for business, and don't like outdated programs, preferring more
toward the bleeding edge, and elx is there, and free, at least at the
present. (However, the download of the new version has been trying for a
couple of days and only succeeded to 30%, having to restart every hour
due to drops. It's on ibiblio and redhat just released on the same
server.)

In fairness, I am enjoying Caldera 3.1.1. It seems quick, responsive,
uncluttered. I added xfce to the login menu by simply going to login
manager and adding "startxfce" to the sessions. No hassle at all, unlike
some, which require scripts be modified, etc.
