All of the advice given is good advice.  But I would like to add, stay clear
of Travan format drives.  Very finicky, expensive tapes.  If it will do the
trick for you, a somewhat outdated, but reliable inexpensive solution would
be DAT DDS2 drive.  Tapes are a couple bucks apiece and can handle 8GB
compresses.  Next in line is the DDS3 at 24GB compressed.  Then comes DDS4,
but they are probably pricier than what you're looking for.
