weird gcc voodoo

[Net Llama!]

Good evening,
I'm attempting to compile jpeg-mmx, and its bombing with this error:
jcdctmgr.c: In function `forward_DCT_x86float32':
jcdctmgr.c:432: `asm' operand requires impossible reload
jcdctmgr.c: In function `forward_DCT_mmx':
jcdctmgr.c:497: `asm' operand requires impossible reload
make: *** [jcdctmgr.o] Error 1

Best as I can tell, its attempting to compile for the wrong 
architecture, or something like that.  For the life of me, i can't 
understand why that could be occuring when the package is designed for 
x86, and i'm building it on an x86.
