no sound on kde

Try setting it manually in the kde sound server. Not sure what you're
running, but on Mandrake8.1 with kde2.2 it's in the main menu under
Configuration -> KDE -> Sound -> Sound Server and click the IO tab. Pick
either ALSA or OSS.
