no sound on kde

I do not have sound on kde of any sort 2.2.1, 2.2.2 and 3.0it comes up with 
this on boot

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
couldn't auto detect which audio I/O method to use
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Ideas, advice all appreciated. No use asking on kde.org they do not answer.
