kernel 2.4.18 and mandrake

I have always compiled my own kernels, however when I did this in the past 
with Mandrake and Suse I ran into problems. So as I can download kernel rpms
for Mandrake to upgrade me to 2.4.18 I was wondering if any manrake users 
herin have done this and is it as simple as just installing the rpms and 
"away we go" or are there gotchas??
