More specifically, the AXIS box is a camera server. The camera can be any
VHS camera that provides composite output. So, you might be able
to use your existing video camera. In addition to ftp access, the
box contains a built-in web server that can have customized
layout, as well as external trigger control. It will also control some
models of cameras on motorized mounts.

We use these for still image capture in our measurement systems, as they
provide jpegs of the current scene. Just keep in mind that the full
resolution stills are interlaced between frames (yes frames, not fields, as
you might expect). So, in one image capture,
the even lines come from one frame and the odd from the next. Of course,
moving video is always this way. The problem is that AXIS have messed up the
'hugesize' still images this way as well. But if you are taking the
continuous image feed, you won't notice. It is only apparent in the
'hugesize' still images it captures. (We evntually solved this by using a
camera we could freeze before taking a snapshot. The AXIS has relays that
can be controlled via http protocol. The camera also captures the
two fields that make up a frame at the same time, still shipping them out
as odd and even frames. When reassembled, the still image is crisp as
it was really captured at the same time.)

I agree. A good product. Made here in slowly-getting-sunny Sweden.

Sony OEM this as a Sony product. And, the processor on which it is based is
available for embedded systems. Quite nice.
