[22:56 peter at penguin:~]$ $PATH
bash:
/usr/java/bin:/usr/lib/qt2/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/peter/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/games:
No such file or directory

[22:56 peter at penguin:~]$ echo $PATH
/usr/java/bin:/usr/lib/qt2/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/peter/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/games

It says "No such file or directory" when you forget the "echo".
