Well, you are aware that the speed of any interface varies over time,
right?

So the best you could do is either take an instantaneous snapshot of the
speed at any moment, or graph it over time.  gkrellm does this very
nicely under X.  I used to use a console app that did it as well,
although i forget the name.  Either way, freshmeat.net is your friend.
