APM and Gateway 2000 Solo 9100

I have been playing with APM and my work-issue laptop. I have been
frustrated because nothing would work: Standby and Suspend both did
nothing. I finally realized that by modprobing apm, this problem was
solved, giving birth to a far greater one. Now, I can suspend and standby,
but when I return from Standby, I lose my USB mouse, never to be heard
from again (I try unplugging and replugging but I keep getting errors
saying that the USB Device refused to take a new address or something).
When I return from Suspend, I get nothing. I don't even get any screen
(although I know it has signal since I can see the backlighting). I'm
confused. I thought APM was supposed to WORK on a computer. Perhaps it's
just a fancy way to cause fsck to check the partitions.
Any help would be... well, helpful :)
