Grip -- Problem solved

Thank you all for your responses. Problem is now solved.
What eventually worked in my case was, however,a little different from
was suggested. I had to deleted the entire contents of the /tmp, and
then run:

chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod 1777 /dev/cdrom

I worked!
