What tool to configure XF86config

Joel Hammer spewed electrons into the ether that assembled into:

which file is getting used? /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config or
XF86Config-4 or what? that's usually the first thing to check.
Personally, I remove all the -4 versions, and make /etc/XF86Config a symlink
to /etc/X11/XF86Config...
