Untrue.  There was a fairly ugly tirade in the MPlayer documentation
about how bad gcc-2.96 is/was, but there never was any requirement to
type anything like that.  There was, at one time, a required configure
option that disabled checking of the gcc versioning.  The problem was,
that MPlayer (and alot of other stuff, like the Linux kernel for
starters) just wouldn't build using the early versions of gcc-2.96.x. 
The later versions are much more compatible with the official gcc tree,
and after some coaxing by RedHat, the MPlayer team relented in their
bashing.

Yes, actually it is.  However, there are alot of benefits to reading the
dox, and providing a semi-customized configure line.
