Compiling avifile

The writer of MPlayer was so irritated by the initial bugs in RH's gcc-2.96
that he makes everybody using it go through a nagware screen where you have
to type "gcc 2.96 is broken" or something like that. Assuming you're
patched up it will compile fine once you select the correct configure option
and submit to the nag. Read the docs very closely, however. This is not
"configure, make, make install" software. I can confirm that it plays my
divx-encoded avi's quite nicely now that I've got it working.

I tried MPlayer first actually. ./configure didn't get any further than
checking my compiler: gcc2.96. Is it really that bad? I tried it with a
--no-debug option -or something like that- and it bombed. Maybe I'll try
it again and try to find out what went wrong.

One question though. Why replace the libavcodec directory in the MPlayer
directory with another one? Or did I misinterpret something? I hope I made
that clear.
