Gnome

I have compiled Gnome for my Caldera 3.1 system.  I use KDE 2.2.2 for my 
regular GUI.  I have been able to get gnome to work for root by inserting 
gnome-session option under the control centre-System-Login Manager-Sessions, 
however this does not work as an ordinary users.  

Where would I look for errors for this kind of start-up?

I think this might be a permissions thing since I compiled everything as 
root, does anyone know where I should start?
