After reading Mike's OOP rant, I must say that I am in total agreement....
The reusability of code coupled with code generation wizards and faster
hardware/larger storage devices has produced a generation of programmers who
cannot see the leaves for the tree's.... They reuse code not knowing why and
as a consiquence, many times increasing the size of the code and/or object in
question beyond all reason. They invoke wizards to save 5 minutes of
programming time and as a result have 250 lines of useless sh!t mixed in with
25 lines of productive code. I could go on and on and on and on and on and
on and on and on...................................
What is particularly alarming about the whole thing is that many of the
members of this generation are now teaching. As an example, My nephew is now
attending Clemson University and is enrolled (2nd year) in thier engineering
program. Due to his exposure (At what many would call an unreasonable age of
5) he prefers to use vi when programming code because he is at a minimum of
2X the productivity level of those using the fancy IDE the school supplies
(With lot's of eye candy, but it handles like a pig and the wizards that are
included generate more spagetti than a good Italian resturaunt). The man who
teaches the class (He has a Phd) got pissed. After a month of arguing with
the teacher, my nephew finally went "underground" with the use of vi and only
used it when no one was looking. Funny thing was that at the end of the
semester, he and one other person were the only people in the class to get a
"A" (Out of a class of more than 35). The fact of the matter is that Lee (My
nephew) knows more about C or C++ programming than the teacher...
It's a sad statement, but true.

Peck
