If you ever want to move away from the somewhat dated rh kernel releases the
'trick' is to download a pristine kernel, or patch (as appropriate) and modify
the following line in /usr/src/linux/Makefile
EXTRAVERSION(space)=(space) -1
this will give you an RH compatible naming convention (eg vmlinux.2.4.17-1) and
thus allow /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit to do it's normal boot up housekeeping.
