I believe there is not a single burner app that is not reliant on cdrecord. I
know K3b uses it. And it appears that the major distros have to do more and
more hacking on it for every release to make it work with "exotic" stuff like DVD.
I expect we'll shortly see cdrecord go the way of XFree86 - massive fork cause
everyone has had it with the guy in charge. We owe him a lot, but from my
readings you couldn't find anyone to defend him. Just my take on it.
